Education:
After serving for thirty-four years as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida Professor Hummel retired from the office in July 2024. During his tenure as an AUSA, in addition to his federal trial work, Professor Hummel also authored numerous appellate briefs and represented the government on multiple occasions during oral argument before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Between 2015 and 2019 he was the Office’s First Assistant United States Attorney, and the Office’s Executive Assistant United States Attorney (the number two and three positions in the office). After serving in those roles Professor Hummel worked, until his retirement, as one of the office's Senior Litigation Counsel. In that role he assisted with the development and implementation of the office's in-house training and mentoring programs for the office's AUSAs. Professor Hummel was also responsible for preparing and presenting for trial complex or difficult federal criminal cases, often involving significant or novel legal issues.
Professor Hummel also served as the original U.S. Attorney’s Office representative for the Southern District of Florida’s District Court reentry initiative known as CARE (Court Assisted Reentry) Court. CARE Court was established to assist former criminal offenders productively reintegrate into their communities following release from federal incarceration. As part of a working group that included several of the Court’s Judges, U.S. Probation Officers and the Federal Public Defender, Professor Hummel helped launch, and ultimately win approval for, the project to become a permanent part of the Court’s criminal justice mission.
During his final year in the U.S. Attorney’s Office Professor Hummel also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami Law School teaching foundational lawyering skills to incoming 1L law students.
Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Professor Hummel was an active duty U.S. Air Force judge advocate. While on active duty he served as primary or sole counsel in over sixty courts-martial as either government or defense counsel. Following his release from active duty, Professor Hummel remained a member of the Air force Judge Advocate Corp as a reservist. In that role, among other assignments, he served as a reserve member of the faculty of the Air Force Judge Advocate General School and of the Law Department at the United States Air Force Academy. Professor Hummel retired from the Air Force in 2014 at the rank of Colonel.
