Candice L. Michael, Esquire is an Academic Success and Professionalism (“ASP”) Professor of Practice at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law.  Ms. Michael joins the ASP Department with a diverse professional background that equips her with the skills and experience necessary to help students achieve academic success and navigate their own career paths. 

Ms. Michael is admitted to The Florida Bar and is pending admission to the U.S. Virgin Islands Bar. Prior to joining Nova, Ms. Michael worked in private practice, where she engaged in active civil litigation in Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands (Pro Hac Vice Admission).  She also has extensive experience in the public sector as a former legal aid attorney who worked passionately to advocate for the rights of underserved communities.  She was the Founding Attorney of her marital and family law firm in South Florida, and served as a Judicial Clerkship immediately following her graduation from Howard University School of Law. 

As a student, Ms. Michael was a competing member of the Charles Hamilton Houston National Moot Court Team, a member of the William B. Bryant American Inn of Court, the Secretary of the Outlaw student organization, studied abroad at the University of Western Cape in the International Studies Program, and completed an Independent Study of alternative dispute resolution in employment law matters.  She also served as a bar course representative and enthusiastically encouraged and educated her peers on the importance of early bar preparation and dedication to excel on the bar examination.  

In addition to her legal career, Ms. Michael has held various leadership roles in local bar associations dedicated to supporting the community and legal profession.  She is a past Secretary and Executive Board Member of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, and past Secretary of the Lee County Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Division.  Ms. Michael is an active member of the Florida Bar’s Family Law Section and has served on various committees therein.  Most notably, as a member of the Publications Committee, Ms. Michael significantly contributed to the drafting of The Florida Bar Family Law Handbook (2023), and The Florida Bar Consumer Pamphlet: Parenting and Divorce (2024); and The Florida Bar Consumer Pamphlet: Divorce in Florida (2024).  Ms. Michael has been recognized by her peers for her contributions to the legal profession and is a past recipient of the Top 40 Under 40 Award by The National Black Lawyers organization.
