In November 2019, Professor Olympia Duhart and Assistant Dean of Students Michele Struffolino held the fourth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Letter Writing Competition: Write a Letter, Change the World. NSU Law students were invited to write an open letter to the public that highlights a modern-day social justice issue. Students were asked to use the letter to raise awareness for the issue they selected, and to promote a strategy for solving the problem.
Out of the many submissions, 1L Abigail Chapman won first place, earning a cash prize and a plaque commemorating this achievement. Abigail's "Letter from a Socially Constructed Jail" on protecting LGBTQ rights. Earning second place was 1L Deandra Hilaire. Deandra's letter raised awareness of an important criminal justice and education issues and offered a strategy for solving the problem.
