NSU Law’s Disability Inclusion and Advocacy Law (DIAL) Clinic is expanding its guardian advocacy services to reach more families throughout Broward County by providing a full day of legal advice to the community focused on how to navigate the process of petitioning pro se for guardian advocacy in the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, Probate Division. With the help of partnering student organizations including: the Public Interest Law Society (PILS), this pro bono event will offer community members the opportunity to receive legal advice on how to complete the initial filings required for a guardian advocacy case in Broward County.

Guardian advocacy is a legal process that allows family members, or friends, of individuals with developmental disabilities to obtain legal authority over some of the individuals’ decision making. Guardian advocacy, unlike guardianship, does not involve an adjudication of incapacity. Obtaining legal documentation for our loved ones with developmental disabilities who are over the age of 18 is a significant action but can be necessary in certain circumstances.

For more information contact Talhia Rangel, Esq., Clinical Fellow at the Disability Inclusion and Advocacy Law (DIAL) Clinic and/or Jennifer Gordon, Esq., Director of Public Interest Programs, NSU Law.
