Florence Shu Blankson is a professor of law at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law, where she teaches business, international, comparative, and commercial law courses.
Internationally, she has taught at the University of Barcelona in Spain, the University of Roma Tre in Italy, the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Tianjin University in China, Charles University in Prague, and other institutions around the world.
Florence holds an LL.B. and a Maîtrise (postgraduate diploma), both with honors, from the University of Yaoundé, an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and a J.S.M. and a J.S.D. from Stanford Law School.
During her sabbatical in the Fall of 2006, she collaborated with the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA) in Cameroon, an organization dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by women living with HIV/AIDS. Her work included reviewing a proposed Model Law on STD/HIV/AIDS for West and Central Africa, assessing a draft law on the Rights and Obligations of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS, and evaluating Cameroon’s implementation of key provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). These experiences culminated in her co-authored book, "Women, the Law, and HIV/AIDS in Africa: A Conundrum for the Legislature?" (Vandeplas Publishing, 2008), which highlights the legal and social challenges surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa.
For her contributions, Professor Shu-Blankson received the Quiet Storm Achievement Award from In Focus magazine in 2007, recognizing her work with SWAA. The following month, her efforts were commended in a personal letter from the Supreme Court of Florida.
During her 2015 sabbatical, she continued her work with SWAA, advocating for the adoption of the Draft Law on HIV/AIDS in Cameroon. She also lobbied NGOs and government officials for concrete follow-up measures, participated in youth sexuality education, and developed a guidance manual to help organizations provide better support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
Beyond her advocacy and research, Professor Shu-Blankson is a member of the American Bar Association, serving in the Business and International Law Divisions, the Corporate Governance Committee, and the International Developments in Corporate Governance Committee.
She has published extensively and delivered presentations at conferences and workshops both locally and internationally.
Professor Shu-Blankson is passionate about encouraging and mentoring young people, and she inspires women to strive for excellence. She is fluent in English, Pidgin English, French, and other local dialects, and she enjoys traveling and meeting people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
